CADS is Finished – Here’s a Final CADS Update!

2 10 2009

I started off so strong with the CADS, but unfortunately life seems to have got in the way! I wish I could have kept it up the way that I started for the whole month, but some things came up that just left no time to complete the CADS project properly. I really enjoyed doing the projects and blogging about them and I would like to keep this up. I like the idea of blogging about craft projects and keeping a kind of journal about them. I still feel pretty good about being able to complete the challenge as much as I did.

I have still been crafting (albeit not quite so often as when I started this challenge), but have not had time to write about it.

Some of my projects include making some new curtains for our living room, making a burgandy dress, some naan breads and trying my hand at making some colourful sushi.

The curtains were made using the tutorial I previously posted here. We did have some curtains up in the living room, but they were a little bit too dark. Also, we got a new sofa and they didn’t really go with the room anymore. The fabric is a light brown broadcloth with a strip of some pretty sari fabric that we found at JoAnn’s. We really liked the sari fabric, but didn’t want to do the whole curtains in this fabric as it would be too dark. We like the new lighter color of the curtains, they really make the room seem brighter.

To make the dress I used McCalls pattern M5849. I made the skirt a little longer and changed the straps on it. Hobby Lobby has an awesome sale on McCalls patterns until tomorrow, with all of them only 99cents each! I couldn’t resist buying a few patterns, so hopefully I will get some time to try the other patterns too soon.

The naan bread I made used a recipe from the All Recipes website. They turned out pretty good and looked pretty much exactly like the photo on the website. Unfortunately I didn’t get a photo of them.

I have made sushi before, but this time I wanted to try using some colourful soy wrappers that I found at the local oriental supermarket. I usually use the nori sheets to wrap the sushi. I don’t think I will use the soy wrappers again. I found them very difficult to use and they looked messy in the end as they were so difficult to roll and they didn’t stick very well. They were very tasty, but I prefer the sushi to look neat.

CADS – Dino Plushie

22 09 2009

For today’s craft I made this little dino plushie out of felt. I managed to take a little craft break from the organising!

We are still organising here, but I will update some photos when we are finished and I get a chance to.

Update

21 09 2009

My apologies for the lack of posts over the past couple of days.

I have been sorting out the house. We moved in a couple of months ago, and were mostly unpacked and the house has been very livable; however there were still a few things that needed unpacking – things that we never really got round to using.

Well I decided that we should finish the unpacking once and for all!

One of the problems was that we didn’t really have enough furniture. Since this is our first home together we didn’t really start off with a ‘house-full’ of furniture so we have been picking up bits and pieces when we see them. I managed to get some more of furniture and have been putting the flat packs together.

I’m trying to get the house properly organised. We’re still getting there and I will post some photos of the craft endevours that we have tackled along the way as soon as possible (probably tomorrow).

CADS – Flower Hairclip

19 09 2009

Unfortunately, I missed yesterday’s craft. I had to go get some vaccinations and it ended up making me feel kind of ill. So that is my excuse for my craft-less day. I have had shots before and it never made me ill so I wasn’t really expecting to feel bad after them.

Anyway, for today’s craft I made another hairclip. This time I made a flower hairclip. I really enjoyed making the hairclips, so I will probably make some more.

I like how the CADS is helping me to find crafts that I really like to do. I am trying to mix up the crafts that I am doing, so I can find out what I really like to do. If there are any crafters that are looking for inspiration and motivation then I would really recommend something like this.

CADS – Hair Clip

17 09 2009

For today’s craft I made this dragonfly hair clip:

It is made out of felt and then sewn onto a barrette.

I like how it turned out so I might try this with a few more designs too.

CADS – Cooking!

16 09 2009

Today I spent a while making a yummy dinner for this evening.

I started off with a cottage pie, which turned out great!

Then for dessert I kind of made it up! I made a kind of apple pie/apple crisp.

I started off with a graham cracker/digestive biscuit cheescake-y type base, next I put some cinnamon apple sauce on top of the base, like an apple pie filling.
To finish, I mixed up some oats, butter and sugar, laid them out on a baking tray and browned them in the oven. I put this granola type mix on top of the apple sauce and just heated it up. Oh, and lots of cinnamon throughout the layers!

It actually tasted pretty nice for a made up recipe!

CADS – Eva Jacket

15 09 2009

For today’s craft I made a thin Blazer/Jacket using the Eva pattern on Burdastyle.

Usually the instructions for the patterns on Burdastyle are pretty good and easy to follow, but the intructions for this pattern were a little confusing and not quite as easy to follow as usual.

I made a few changes to this pattern, such as shortening the sleeves as I wanted 3/4 length sleeves since it is still hot here in Texas.

It is the first time I have made a jacket. I’m not sure if I like the rounded neckline on it. I think I would prefer a more V-neck shape, however I still enjoyed the process of making the jacket and I think I learned quite a lot from it.

I think it looks pretty cute with the collage necklace I made a few days ago :)

CADS – Skirt

14 09 2009

My latest craft project is a skirt I have been meaning to make for a while – I’ve has the fabric for a month or two!

I think that I may hem it a little shorter than it is right now, but I think I’ll sleep on it before doing that to make sure I really want to make it shorter.

I didn’t use a pattern for the skirt.

CADS – Fabric Flowers

12 09 2009

Today I made some Fold and Twist Fabric flowers from a tutorial found over at Calamity Kim‘s blog.

Calamity Kim suggests sewing some leaves to go with the flowers and I think this is what I will do. I think I am going to make them into brooches.

I also really like the Chiffon Flowers on the site and I think I may give them a go at some point.

CADS – Collage Necklace

11 09 2009

Today I made a collage necklace out of some fabric scraps I had.

The tutorial was on a Threadbanger episode.

It took a little time, but it was very easy to do. I like how it turned out.

I wrapped some embroidery thread around the closure in the back to make it look neater.
